INSURANCE POLICY CLAUSES

Find out when your insurance cover actually begins

A waiting period is a stretch of time after a policy or benefit starts during which some or all claims are not paid. A policy can have a general one, longer ones for particular benefits or for pre-existing conditions, and different ones for accidents and illness. Disability cover adds a related idea, the elimination period. Ask Search+ "Which waiting periods apply under this policy, and from what date?" and the answer cites each clause, so you can read when each one starts and ends.

How to find waiting periods with Search+

  1. Upload the policy, schedule, riders and your start dates

Waiting periods may sit in the policy wording, the schedule of benefits and individual riders. Add them all, along with the certificate or confirmation that shows your start date, which may be a PDF or a scan of a mailed letter, so an answer can connect the period with when it began.

  2. Ask about the general period, then each benefit

Ask whether there is a general waiting period, then ask about the benefits you care about one at a time, and then about pre-existing conditions. Benefit-specific waiting periods are often listed separately and are easy to overlook.

  3. Ask what starts, waives or restarts the clock

Open each citation and ask what date the period runs from, whether accidents are treated differently, whether earlier cover counts toward it and whether changing the policy starts it again.

Questions to ask about waiting periods

The general period

Is there a general waiting period after the policy starts, and what is excluded during it?

Benefit by benefit

Which benefits in the schedule carry their own waiting period, and how long is each?

Accidents

Does the policy treat injuries from an accident differently from illness during a waiting period?

Earlier cover

Does the policy give credit for time spent under previous insurance toward any waiting period?

Upgrades

If I increase my cover, does a new waiting period apply to the higher benefit?

Disability benefits

What elimination period does the disability cover set, and from what event is it counted?

What to look for in a waiting period

General and benefit-specific periods

A policy may set one waiting period for most claims and longer ones for particular benefits or for pre-existing conditions. The lengths vary by insurer, product and place, so read each period from your own documents.

What starts the clock

Waiting periods usually run from a stated date, such as the policy start date or the date a benefit was added. Check which date applies, because an upgrade or a rider can have a different start from the base policy.

Exceptions for accidents and continuity

Some policies shorten or waive a waiting period for accidental injury, or count time under earlier cover toward it. If your policy does either, the wording sets the conditions.

Elimination periods in disability cover

Disability and similar income cover often use an elimination period: time that must pass after a disability begins before benefits are paid. It works differently from a waiting period after purchase, so read how the policy defines it.

Dates you can check

Search+ answers with inline citations to the clause it used, with a page or section reference when the policy has one. AI answers can be incomplete, so read the cited period and its start date yourself.

What is a waiting period in an insurance policy?

A waiting period is a set time after cover or a particular benefit begins during which some or all claims are not paid. The policy states its length, what it applies to, the date it runs from and any exceptions.

A cooling-off or free-look period is a window to cancel after purchase, not a delay in cover. An exclusion removes a risk for as long as it applies, while a waiting period delays cover only for a time.

Waiting period questions

Can Search+ find all the waiting periods in my policy?
Ask about the general waiting period, then about each benefit and about pre-existing conditions. The answers cite each clause they find; because benefit-specific periods may sit in schedules or riders, upload those too.
Can it tell me the date my cover starts for a particular benefit?
It can find the waiting period and the start date printed in your documents and cite both. Working out the exact end date is something to confirm with the insurer, especially if a rider or upgrade has its own start.
Will a claim during a waiting period be paid?
Search+ can show you what the policy says about claims during the waiting period and any exceptions, with citations. It does not give insurance or medical advice or predict a claim decision; ask the insurer about your case.
What is the difference between a waiting period and an elimination period?
In many policies a waiting period follows the start of cover, while an elimination period follows the start of a disability. Ask how your policy defines each, and the cited definitions show which applies.
Can I check which of two policies has shorter waiting periods?
Upload both and ask how their waiting periods differ for a particular benefit. The answer cites each policy's clause so you can compare the periods and their conditions.
Should I double-check a waiting period the answer gives?
Always. AI answers can be incomplete or inaccurate, and a waiting period depends on both its length and its start date, so read the cited clause in full.
