Read how your insurance policy can be cancelled, and by whom
Cancellation terms set out how a policy can end before its period runs out: when you may cancel, when the insurer may, what notice each side must give and what happens to premium already paid. They usually sit among the policy conditions, with related rules on non-payment, non-renewal and reinstatement nearby. Ask Search+ "How can this policy be cancelled, and what refund applies?" and the answer cites the condition, so you can read the exact terms before you act.

How to find cancellation terms with Search+
- Upload the policy, the schedule and any notices
Add the full policy wording, the declarations page or schedule, any endorsement on cancellation, and letters from the insurer such as a renewal or non-payment notice. Those usually come as PDFs, and a cancellation request you drafted yourself can go in as a Word file. An answer about ending the policy may need all of them.
- Ask separately about your right and the insurer's
Ask how you can cancel, then ask on what grounds the insurer can cancel, then ask about non-renewal at the end of the term. These are usually separate provisions with separate notice rules, and separate questions keep each citation clear.
- Follow up on premium, grace and reinstatement
Open the citation, then ask what the policy says about refunding unused premium, any grace period for late payment and whether a lapsed policy can be reinstated. Those terms often live in other sections.
Questions to ask about cancellation
How do I cancel this policy, does it have to be in writing, and from what date does cancellation take effect?
On what grounds does the policy allow the insurer to cancel, and how much notice must it give?
What does the policy say about returning premium for the unused part of the term, and is any charge deducted?
Does the policy mention a period after purchase in which I can cancel and get my premium back?
What happens if a premium payment is late, and does the policy describe a grace period before coverage ends?
How does the policy distinguish cancellation from a decision not to renew at the end of the term?
What to look for in cancellation terms
The policyholder's right to cancel is often broad, while the insurer's is usually limited to listed grounds such as non-payment or misrepresentation. Read both, and check which grounds your policy actually names.
Cancellation usually needs notice in a set form and takes effect on a stated date. The notice period and method vary by insurer and by place, so read them in your own policy and any notice you received.
Policies describe how unused premium is returned, sometimes proportionally and sometimes after a deduction or fee. Ask for the refund wording and any example the policy gives.
Grace periods, a cooling-off or free-look period, non-renewal and reinstatement are separate provisions that affect when coverage really ends. They may be in a different section from the cancellation clause itself.
Search+ finds passages by meaning, so a question about cancelling still finds wording headed termination or ending the policy. Each answer cites the passage it used, so you can read it in full.
Cancellation wording you may see, and a follow-up question
| Wording you may see | What it usually signals | A follow-up question |
|---|---|---|
| "you may cancel this policy at any time" | A policyholder right to cancel | What form must my request take, and when is it effective? |
| "we may cancel" or "the insurer may terminate" | Grounds on which the insurer may end the policy | Which grounds are listed, and what notice is required? |
| "pro rata" or "short rate" | How unused premium is calculated on refund | How does the policy say my refund would be worked out? |
| "grace period" | Time to pay a late premium before coverage lapses | How long is the grace period, and is coverage in force during it? |
| "free look" or "cooling-off" | A period after purchase to cancel with a refund | Does this policy include one, and how is it described? |
| "non-renewal" | The policy ends at the close of its term rather than early | What notice does the policy say applies to non-renewal? |
| "reinstatement" | A way to restore a lapsed policy | What conditions does the policy set for reinstatement? |
What are cancellation terms in an insurance policy?
Cancellation terms are the provisions that say how the policyholder or the insurer can end a policy before its term expires, what notice each must give, when the cancellation takes effect and how any unused premium is handled.
