BANK STATEMENT DETAILS

Find the recurring charges hiding in your bank statements

Recurring charges are the payments that leave an account on a schedule: rent or mortgage, insurance premiums, loan payments, utilities, phone plans, gym memberships and streaming services. Each one is small enough to overlook in a single month, and together they set the floor of what the account spends. Ask Search+ "Which payees appear in every month of these statements?" and the answer cites each occurrence, so you can see the dates and amounts for yourself.

How to list recurring charges with Search+

  1. Upload at least a few consecutive months

A charge only shows a pattern over time, and some recur quarterly or yearly. Add as many consecutive statements as you have, so a quarterly premium or an annual renewal has a chance to appear twice. PDF statements and Excel files saved from online banking can sit side by side in the same workspace.

  2. Ask by type of payment

Ask separately about automatic ACH debits such as loans and insurance, card payments to subscriptions and memberships, and bill payments you set up through online banking. Each type is described differently on the statement.

  3. Check each occurrence and look for changes

Open the cited lines for a payee across months. If the amount moved, ask when it changed and whether a notice in the statements or a letter you uploaded explains why.

What to look for in recurring charges

ACH debits and card charges look different

Loan, insurance and utility payments often come out as ACH debits with the company name and a customer or reference code. Memberships and online services are often charged to a debit card and show a shortened merchant name and sometimes a city or phone number.

Names drift between months

The same biller can appear with slightly different text from one statement to the next, for example with a changing reference number. Asking by meaning, such as "payments to my phone carrier", groups them better than matching exact words.

Not every cycle is monthly

Some insurance, memberships and software renew quarterly, twice a year or annually. A short run of statements can miss them entirely, so include a longer period when you want the complete list.

Amounts can change quietly

Variable bills like utilities move every month, while a fixed membership may rise after a promotional period ends. Comparing the same payee across months shows when the amount changed.

Patterns across statements, with each line cited

Ask Search+ for payments that repeat across the statements in a workspace, and each occurrence it lists is cited to its own statement. Answers can miss an entry, so check the months in between.

What is a recurring charge on a bank statement?

A recurring charge is a payment that leaves the account repeatedly on a regular schedule to the same payee, usually because you authorized automatic debits or saved your card with a merchant.

A recurring charge is not the same as a standing transfer between your own accounts, which moves money without spending it. Repeated card purchases at the same shop are also different, because they happen when you shop rather than on a schedule.

Recurring charge questions

Can Search+ list every subscription and automatic bill on my bank statements?
Ask which payees appear in more than one month, and the answer lists them with a citation for each occurrence. A long list can still miss one, so read the statements for any month the answer skips.
Will it catch a charge that only comes once a year?
Only if the statements for that month are in the workspace. Upload a full year if you want annual renewals to appear, and ask specifically about payments that occur once.
Can it show when a bill went up?
Ask how the amount paid to that payee changed over the months in the workspace. Each month's line is cited, so you can open them in order and see where the new amount starts.
Can it check whether a cancelled service is still charging me?
Ask whether that payee appears after the month you cancelled. If it does, the cited line gives you the date and amount to bring to the merchant or your bank.
Will Search+ tell me which subscriptions to cut?
No. It finds and cites the recurring charges on your statements, but it does not give budgeting or financial advice. What to keep is your call, and what each service costs is there in the cited lines.
