Track down every subscription billing your credit card
Subscriptions are charges a merchant bills to your card on a schedule because you signed up for a service: streaming, music, software, cloud storage, news, apps, meal kits, memberships. They often appear under an unfamiliar merchant name or under an app store, and annual ones surface only once a year. Ask Search+ "Which charges on these statements look like subscriptions?" and each cited line shows the merchant name, date and amount the issuer recorded.

How to find subscriptions with Search+
- Upload a full year if you can
Monthly services show up in any statement, but annual renewals only appear once. Upload twelve months of statements for each card, in whichever format your issuer offers, PDF or Excel, so the yearly charges are in the workspace too.
- Ask about monthly, annual and app store billing separately
Ask one question about charges that repeat monthly, one about charges that appear once a year, and one about charges billed through an app store or payment platform, which may bundle several services under one name.
- Check start dates and price changes
For each subscription, open the citations in order and ask when it first appeared and whether the amount changed. A trial period that turned into a paid plan, or a promotional price ending, usually shows as a new or larger charge.
Questions to ask about subscriptions
List every merchant that charged this card in three or more months, with the amount each time.
Which charges appear only once in the year but look like a membership or software renewal?
How many separate charges came through the app store each month, and did the total change?
Did any streaming or software subscription cost more at the end of the year than at the start?
What does the statement show for the merchant listed with a web address on the 3rd of each month?
Has the music service charged the card since the month I cancelled it?
What to look for in subscriptions
The descriptor a merchant sends can differ from the brand you know: a parent company name, an abbreviation, a payment processor or a web address. Asking about the kind of service, not just the name, helps catch these.
Subscriptions bought inside phone apps are often billed by the app store, so the card statement names the store, not the app. The detail of which app charged what sits in your app store account, not on the card statement.
Many services start with a trial or introductory price and then bill the regular price automatically. The first full-price charge may appear weeks after signing up.
When a card is reissued, some card networks pass the new details to merchants that bill you regularly, so subscriptions can continue on the new card. Check statements for the new card too before assuming one stopped.
Ask for charges that repeat across the statements in a workspace, and each occurrence comes with a citation. Search+ matches by meaning, so a variation in the merchant text can still be grouped.
Subscription wording you may see and what to ask next
| Wording you may see | What it usually signals | A follow-up question |
|---|---|---|
| A merchant name with ".COM" or a web address | Often an online service billing the card | In which months did this merchant charge the card? |
| An app store or platform name | One or more in-app subscriptions bundled | How did the amounts from this merchant change month to month? |
| "RECURRING" or "MEMBERSHIP" | A charge set up to repeat | When did this charge first appear in the statements here? |
| "ANNUAL" or "RENEWAL" | A yearly charge | Is there a matching charge from the previous year? |
| A processor's name with a short code | A smaller merchant using a payment service | What other text does the statement print on this line? |
| "CREDIT" or "REFUND" from the same merchant | Money returned, perhaps after cancelling | Did charges from this merchant stop after the refund? |
What is a subscription charge on a credit card statement?
A subscription charge is a payment a merchant takes from your card on a recurring schedule, usually monthly or yearly, under an authorization you gave when you signed up for a service.
