Find and read the income deposits on your bank statements
Income deposits are the credits that bring money into an account: a paycheck by direct deposit, a benefit payment, a client paying an invoice, a transfer from a payment app. On a statement they sit among refunds, reversals and transfers between your own accounts, which look similar at a glance. Ask Search+ "Which deposits on these statements come from an employer?" and each answer cites the deposit lines it used, so you can confirm the payer, date and amount yourself.

How to pick out income deposits with Search+
- Upload every statement for the period
Add each month you need, as the PDF or Excel statements your bank lets you save, plus statements for any savings or second checking account. Money moved between your own accounts shows up as a deposit too, and having both sides in one workspace makes those transfers easy to set aside.
- Ask about each source of money on its own
Ask separately about payroll, government or benefit payments, payments from clients or platforms, and cash or check deposits. Each source tends to be described in its own way, and one question per source keeps the cited lines clean.
- Check descriptions and follow the reversals
Open each citation and read the full description, which often carries the payer's name or an ACH company code. If a credit looks like a refund or a returned payment, ask a follow-up about the original debit so both lines are in front of you.
Questions to ask about income deposits
On which dates did direct deposits from my employer arrive in each month, and were any of them different amounts?
List every deposit that came from a business or a payment platform rather than from my own accounts.
Is there a month in these statements where the usual payroll deposit does not appear?
Which deposits were made in cash or by check, and does the statement show where they were deposited?
Which credits look like merchant refunds or reversals rather than money earned?
What to look for in income deposits
Payroll by ACH usually appears with the employer's name or its payroll provider, often followed by words like PAYROLL, DIR DEP or SALARY. Some employers use a processor's name instead of their own, so the payer you expect may not appear as written.
A transfer from your own savings, a loan disbursement or a reversal of a fee all increase the balance but are not earnings. Checking where each credit came from keeps them out of an income picture.
Money from payment apps, marketplaces or gig platforms usually arrives as a batch transfer named after the platform, not after the person or customer who paid. The platform's own records explain what the batch contains.
A deposit made near the end of a period can post on the next statement, and payroll that falls on a weekend or holiday can arrive early or late. Look across neighboring months before deciding a deposit is missing.
Search+ answers with inline citations to the statement lines it used and the statement each came from, so you can read the payer and amount rather than trust a list.
Deposit wording you may see and what to ask next
| Wording you may see | What it usually signals | A follow-up question |
|---|---|---|
| "DIR DEP" or "PAYROLL" | A paycheck paid by direct deposit | Which employer or payroll provider is named, and how often does it appear? |
| "ACH CREDIT" with a company name | An electronic payment from a business or agency | Does the same payer appear every month, and for the same amount? |
| "TRANSFER FROM" with an account ending | Money moved in from another account | Is that account one of mine in this workspace? |
| "MOBILE DEPOSIT" or "BRANCH DEPOSIT" | A check or cash deposited by you | What deposits were made this way, and on which dates? |
| "REFUND", "RETURN" or "REVERSAL" | Money coming back, not new income | What was the original charge this credit reverses? |
| A platform or app name | A batch payout from a marketplace or payment service | How many payouts came from this platform in the period? |
What is an income deposit on a bank statement?
An income deposit is a credit to the account that represents money received from outside, such as wages, benefits, business receipts or payments from clients, as opposed to money moved between your own accounts.
