See what changed between handbook editions, or how two employers differ
Handbooks change quietly. A revised edition can tighten remote work eligibility, move a PTO cap or reword the disciplinary steps, and a change notice may not list every edit. People also compare handbooks across employers, for example after a merger or when weighing a job offer. Upload both documents to one Search+ workspace and ask about one policy at a time; the answer explains the difference in chat and cites each handbook.

How to compare handbooks in one workspace
- Upload both editions or both employers' handbooks
Give the files names that make them easy to tell apart, such as the year or the company. Add any supplements that belong to each handbook as well.
- List the policies to compare in Workspace Context
For example: "Compare these handbooks on paid time off, benefits eligibility, remote work and the disciplinary process. Say which document each point comes from." The instructions apply to every question you ask in the workspace.
- Ask about one policy at a time
Ask "How did the PTO carryover rule change between these editions?" and open both citations. Then move to the next policy instead of asking for every difference at once.
Comparison questions for handbooks
What changed in the remote work policy between the previous handbook and this one?
How do the two handbooks differ on how PTO is earned and how much can carry over to the next year?
Where do the two companies' handbooks take different positions on overtime approval and timekeeping?
Comparing these two employers' handbooks, which describes a longer waiting period before benefits begin?
Did the revised handbook change the steps of corrective action or the right to appeal?
Is there any policy in the old edition that no longer appears in the new one?
Comparison points that matter for handbooks
Accrual, caps, carryover and payout on leaving often change between editions and can differ widely between employers.
Who counts as full-time, how long a new hire waits and which roles qualify can change who gets a benefit or a flexible arrangement at all.
A change from "employees are entitled" to "employees may request" can matter more than a changed number. Read the exact wording in both versions.
Deleted policies are easy to miss because there is nothing new to read. Ask directly whether a topic in the older edition is still covered.
Search+ compares documents in chat and cites the passage in each one, so you can trace every difference back to both handbooks. It is not a tracked-changes file.
Handbook comparison points and what to ask
| Comparison point | Why it matters | A question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| PTO accrual and carryover | Affects how much time off you can use and keep | How do carryover limits differ? |
| Benefits waiting period | Decides when coverage starts | Which handbook has the shorter wait before benefits begin? |
| Remote work eligibility | Decides who can work away from the office | Did eligibility for remote work change? |
| Disciplinary steps | Shapes what happens before dismissal | Do both handbooks describe progressive discipline? |
| Complaint routes | Determines where concerns can be raised | Which reporting options does each handbook list? |
| Statements about the handbook itself | Explains how policies can change | How does each handbook describe its right to revise policies? |
What is a handbook comparison in Search+?
