Find the auto-renewal clause and the date you must act by
An auto-renewal clause extends a contract for another term unless someone gives notice of non-renewal within a set window before the current term ends. Miss the window and you may be committed for a further full term. Ask Search+ "Does this agreement renew automatically, and how much notice stops it?" and the answer cites the renewal wording, the notice period and any price change on renewal, so you can confirm the deadline in the text.

How to check renewal terms with Search+
- Upload the agreement and every order form
Renewal terms often differ between a master agreement and the order forms under it, and an order form may set its own subscription term. Add them all to one workspace so the answer reflects the document that governs each term.
- Ask for the term, the renewal and the notice separately
First ask how long the initial term is and when it started. Then ask how long each renewal lasts, and finally how much notice of non-renewal is needed and how it must be given. Three answers, three citations, one deadline you can work out.
- Check the notices clause and any price terms
Open the cited renewal wording first. If the renewal clause says notice must be in writing, ask what the notices section requires. Then ask whether fees can rise on renewal, which is often set out in the fees section rather than next to the renewal wording.

How many days before the end of the current term must we send notice of non-renewal?
When the agreement renews, is the renewal term the same length as the initial term?

What to look for in an auto-renewal clause
The key detail is usually a period measured backward from the end of the term, such as a number of days before expiry. Notice sent outside that window may not count, depending on the wording.
Some contracts renew for the same length as the initial term, others for shorter periods such as month to month. A multi-year renewal is a very different commitment from a monthly one.
Renewal is a common point for fee increases. Check whether increases need advance notice, are capped or tied to an index, and where in the contract that wording sits.
Non-renewal notice often has to follow the notices clause, which may require writing, a named recipient or a particular delivery method. Read both clauses together.
Some places have specific rules for automatic renewals in consumer contracts, such as reminder or cancellation requirements. These vary by location and contract type, so check what applies to you rather than assuming.
Search+ cites the renewal and notice wording, with a page or section reference when the contract has one. AI answers can be incomplete, so work out the final date from the cited text yourself.
Renewal wording and what it usually signals
| Wording you may see | What it usually signals | A follow-up question |
|---|---|---|
| "shall automatically renew for successive periods" | An evergreen contract that continues until someone stops it | How long is each renewal period? |
| "unless either party gives notice of non-renewal" | Either side can stop renewal | How much notice is required, and in what form? |
| "prior to the end of the then-current term" | A deadline measured back from the end of the term | What is the last day to send notice? |
| "month-to-month" | A short rolling renewal | Can either party end a monthly renewal, and with what notice? |
| "fees may be increased upon renewal" | A price change tied to renewal | Is there a cap on renewal increases, and how are we told? |
| "the Initial Term" | The starting point for counting deadlines | When did the initial term start, according to the contract? |
What is an auto-renewal clause?
An auto-renewal clause, sometimes called an evergreen clause, provides that a contract continues for a further term when the current term ends, unless a party gives notice that it does not want to renew within the time the contract allows.
