ANNUAL REPORT SECTIONS

See how each division performed, from the review pages to the segment note

Segment performance shows how each part of a group did on its own: a division, a product line or a region. An annual report usually covers it twice, once in the operating review with management's commentary and once in the segment note to the financial statements with the audited figures. Ask Search+ "How did each segment perform this year?" and the answer cites both places, so you can match the story to the numbers.

How to read segment results with Search+

  1. Upload the report and the prior year

Segment figures mean most beside last year's. Add both annual reports, usually PDFs, and the most recent investor presentation if it breaks the segments down further; a segment data pack published as an Excel file belongs here too.

  2. Ask about each segment and each measure

Ask about one segment at a time, and separately about revenue, segment profit and any margin the report gives. Groups often measure segment profit in their own way, so a narrow question keeps the measure clear.

  3. Follow the segment note and its reconciliation

The segment note usually reconciles segment profit to group profit through unallocated costs and adjustments. Ask about that reconciliation, and open its citation alongside the review commentary.

Questions to ask about segment performance

Division by division

What revenue and segment profit did each division report this year, and how does that compare with last year?

Management's explanation

In the operating review, what reasons does management give for the decline in the largest segment?

Geography

How is revenue split by region, and which region grew fastest?

The segment measure

How does the company define the profit measure it uses for segments, and what does it leave out?

Unallocated costs

Which costs are held centrally and not charged to any segment?

Restatement

Were last year's segment figures restated because of a reorganization, and how were they changed?

What to look for in segment performance

Two locations, two voices

The operating review gives management's narrative and sometimes extra measures; the segment note in the accounts gives the audited figures. Read both, because the review may stress the measures that look best.

Segments follow management's view

Segments are generally drawn the way the company's leadership reviews the business internally. That makes them useful but not standardized, so two peers' segments rarely line up neatly.

Segment profit is company-defined

The profit measure used for segments may exclude central costs, amortization or one-off items. The definition is usually in the segment note.

Reorganizations reset comparisons

When segments are redrawn, prior-year figures are often restated. Check for restatement language before reading year-on-year changes.

Geographic and product splits

Besides operating segments, the note may give revenue by country or region and by product. These splits answer different questions from the segment table.

Check figures against the segment table

Search+ answers from the words and numbers in the segment note and review, but a figure taken from a dense multi-column table can come back incomplete or matched to the wrong segment or year. Open the citation and read the table in the report before relying on a figure.

What is segment performance in an annual report?

Segment performance is the reporting of results for each operating segment of a company, such as a division, product line or region, so readers can see which parts of the business drive revenue and profit. It appears in the management review and in a segment note to the financial statements.

It is not the same as group results, which combine all segments and add central items. Revenue disaggregation in the revenue note is related but answers a different question, breaking sales down by type or timing rather than by business unit.

Segment performance questions

Can Search+ pull each segment's revenue and profit from the note?
Ask for each segment's figures and it answers from the report with citations to the segment note and review. Before you use a number, open the cited excerpt and make sure it belongs to the right segment and the right year in the report's table.
Why does the segment total not equal group profit?
Usually because of central costs and adjustments that are not allocated to segments. Ask for the reconciliation in the segment note, and the answer cites where the report bridges the two.
Can it tell me if segments were reorganized this year?
Ask whether the segment structure changed and whether comparatives were restated. The answer cites the wording in the segment note or accounting policies when the report describes such a change.
Can I compare one division across several years?
Yes. Upload the reports for each year and ask how the division's results moved. Each figure is cited to the report it came from, so a restatement shows up as a difference you can read.
Will Search+ tell me which segment is worth investing in?
No. It finds and cites what the report says about each segment. That is not investment advice, and it does not rate businesses or tell you what to buy.
