Find what an annual report says about next year, and how firmly it says it
Outlook and guidance is the forward-looking part of an annual report: what management expects for the coming year and sometimes beyond, from a specific range for revenue or earnings to a few cautious sentences about trading conditions. It may sit at the end of the chair's or chief executive's letter, in a short outlook box, or inside the financial review. Ask Search+ "What does the company expect for next year?" and the answer cites the statement, so you can read its exact wording and conditions.

How to find outlook statements with Search+
- Upload the report and the latest update
Guidance in an annual report can be overtaken by a later trading update or results release. Add the annual report PDF and any more recent statement you have, whether that is a results announcement PDF or your own notes from the latest call in Word, so you can see whether the outlook has since moved.
- Ask about each type of guidance on its own
Ask separately about revenue or volume, margins or profit, capital spending, and medium-term targets. Companies often give a firm range for one and only a direction for another, and separate questions keep that difference visible.
- Read the assumptions and the cautionary text
Guidance usually rests on stated assumptions, such as exchange rates or market conditions, and is followed by forward-looking statement language. Ask about the assumptions and open their citation beside the guidance itself.
Questions to ask about outlook and guidance
What does management say it expects for revenue and profit in the coming year?
Is the guidance given as a range, a single figure or only a direction such as growth or decline?
What assumptions about currency, prices or demand does the outlook depend on?
Does the report restate any medium-term financial targets, and were any changed?
What did last year's report expect for this year, and what does this year's report say actually happened?
Which words does the outlook statement use to describe trading conditions, and are they more or less cautious than the prior year?
What to look for in outlook and guidance
Outlook wording often appears in the chair's statement, the chief executive's review and the financial review, sometimes with slightly different emphasis. Ask for every outlook statement in the report, not just the first.
Some companies give numeric ranges, others only qualitative direction, and some give no guidance at all. Note which metric each statement covers and how specific it is.
Guidance is usually conditional on stated assumptions about markets, prices or currency. If those change, the guidance may no longer hold, so read them with the numbers.
Guidance is often given on an adjusted or constant-currency basis rather than on reported figures. Check which basis applies before setting guidance against reported results.
An annual report is published some time after the year ends, and the company may update its guidance later in a separate release. Treat the report's outlook as of its publication date.
Search+ cites the outlook passage it used and lets you open the excerpt, so you read the company's exact qualifiers rather than a paraphrase. Ask the same question of a single report or the whole workspace.
Outlook wording and what it signals
| Wording you may see | What it usually signals | A follow-up question |
|---|---|---|
| "we expect" followed by a range | Quantified guidance for the year | Which metric does the range cover, and on what basis? |
| "in line with market expectations" | Management is pointing to analysts' consensus without giving a number | Does the report give any figures of its own for next year? |
| "at constant currency" or "organic" | Guidance excludes currency or acquisition effects | How does the report define this basis? |
| "medium-term targets" | Goals over several years rather than the next one | Over what period, and were the targets changed? |
| "remain cautious" or "challenging environment" | Qualitative warning without numbers | Which markets or factors does management say are difficult? |
| "forward-looking statements" | Cautionary language about uncertainty | Which risk factors does the cautionary statement refer to? |
