NotebookLM alternatives

NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook in Google's help center, answers from the sources you add with inline citations and is free with a Google account. People look elsewhere when they hit its 50-source limit on the free plan, want answers that can draw on more than their sources, or prefer not to keep their work in a Google account. The closest alternatives are Search+ for focused document workspaces, Claude Projects and ChatGPT Projects for a general assistant around your files, and Copilot Notebooks if your files live in Microsoft 365.

We make Search+, one of the alternatives below. We compared NotebookLM and each alternative on files, citations, instructions, sharing and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 11, 2026.

What is NotebookLM?

NotebookLM is Google's AI research notebook, renamed Gemini Notebook in its help center. You add sources such as PDFs, Word and PowerPoint files, Google Docs, web pages, YouTube videos and audio, then chat with them and get grounded answers with inline citations, or turn them into study guides, briefings, audio overviews and mind maps.

Not the same as the Gemini chat app: NotebookLM answers from the sources in a notebook.

What NotebookLM does well

Takes almost any source

PDFs, Office files, Google Docs, web pages, YouTube links and audio can all go into one notebook.

Cited, grounded answers

Answers are grounded in your sources with inline citations.

Free to start

Anyone with a Google account can sign up free.

Generated formats

Study guides, briefings, audio overviews and mind maps from your sources.

Where NotebookLM falls short

Source cap on the free plan

Free users can add up to 50 sources per notebook; more needs a Google AI plan.

Answers stop at your sources

If the answer is not in the source material, NotebookLM will not provide one.

Tied to Google

You sign in with a Google account, and higher limits come through Google AI plans or Workspace licenses.

Why people look for a NotebookLM alternative

  • The free plan holds 50 sources per notebook, and higher limits need a Google AI plan.
  • It answers only from your sources; people who want general knowledge mixed in move to an assistant with projects.
  • Higher limits and paid sharing features come through Google plans, which suits Google users less well than others.
