AI document chat

AI document chat with scope, history and citations

Search+ is an AI document chat built around four controls: the scope of each question, citations on every answer, a history of saved threads, and standing instructions for the workspace. You choose whether a question runs over every PDF in a workspace or one document, answers stream in with inline citations to their excerpts, and each thread is saved so you can reopen or search it later. Workspace Context lets you set rules once instead of retyping them in every prompt.

You can create an account without entering payment details.

The chat controls, in use

Most document chats look alike at first glance: a box to type in and an answer underneath. The difference is in what you can steer, and in what you can check afterwards. Here is each control in Search+ and what it changes in the reply you get.

Scope: workspace or one document

Ask "What are the payment terms?" across the workspace and the answer cites every file that mentions them. Pin the same question to the master agreement and only that file is used.

Citations while the answer streams

Text appears as it is written, with citation markers attached. Each marker opens the excerpt behind that sentence.

History you can search

Every conversation is kept. Search your conversations by name to find last week's thread instead of asking the same thing twice.

Workspace Context

Write once that answers should use your team's glossary and flag anything undated. Every later question in that workspace is answered with that instruction applied.

What is AI document chat?

AI document chat is a chat interface whose answers are generated from documents you supply. Underneath, the system retrieves passages from your files that relate to the question and has a language model compose a reply from them. Where products differ is in the controls around that loop. Can you limit which documents are consulted? Can you see the passages that were used? Is the conversation saved, and can it be found again? Can you give instructions that persist? Search+ answers yes to each: scope control at the question level, inline citations with openable excerpts, saved and searchable threads, and Workspace Context. The chat runs in the browser, and the interface is in English. These controls matter most on long projects, where the same collection is questioned many times by the same person and the cost of an unverifiable answer, or of a lost thread, adds up quickly.

A document editor with an AI writing button. AI document chat reads and answers questions about files; it does not draft or edit the documents themselves.

How to run a document chat in Search+

  1. Open a workspace and upload

Create a workspace and drag in your PDFs, up to 10 per batch. Wait until each file shows as indexed.

  2. Write the Workspace Context (optional)

Add standing instructions such as priorities, terms to use or evidence standards. They apply to every question asked in this workspace.

  3. Set the scope and ask

Leave the question on the full workspace, or narrow it to a single document, then ask. The reply streams in with citations.

  4. Return to the thread later

Find the conversation in your history, by scrolling or by searching its name, and continue it with the same workspace and scope.

Controls that make the chat dependable

Question-level scope

Ask across every document in a workspace or narrow to one.

Streaming answers

Replies appear as they are written, so you can start reading at once.

Inline citations

Answers cite the source document and excerpt; open any citation to read the passage.

Honest locations

Page or section references appear when the document provides them, and none are invented.

Saved, searchable threads

Reopen earlier conversations from history or search them by name.

Standing instructions

Workspace Context applies your rules to every question in the workspace.

Where the chat stops

No downloads of the conversation

There is no export. Copy the parts of an answer you need.

Set the scope before you ask

If a question should only use one file, choose that document in the scope control rather than relying on the wording of the question to single it out.

Instructions shape answers, they do not guarantee them

Workspace Context is applied to each question, but check the cited excerpts before relying on the result.

Questions about AI document chat

Is there a free AI document chat?
Search+ lets you create an account without entering payment details. It does not advertise a free plan, so check the current terms when you sign up.
Do I upload the document, or paste text?
You upload PDF files to a workspace by drag and drop, up to 10 per batch. Search+ processes each file so its text can be retrieved and cited in answers.
Is this a document reader too?
It reads the PDF for you and answers about it, and each citation opens the excerpt it used. It does not include a full page-by-page viewer, so keep the original PDF open if you want to browse it.
Can I control which documents the AI uses?
Yes. Each question can run over the whole workspace or be narrowed to one document.
What is Workspace Context?
A set of standing instructions saved for a workspace, such as terminology, priorities or exclusions, and applied to every question asked in it.
Can I find an old document chat?
Yes. Conversations are saved, and you can reopen them from your history or search them by name.
Why do the answers appear word by word?
Search+ streams each answer as it is written, so you can start reading while the rest arrives. The citation markers come with the text, and you can open them once the sentence you care about has appeared.
How do I keep one chat focused on a single contract?
Narrow the question to that document. The answer is drawn from the chosen PDF alone, and you can widen the scope back to the whole workspace whenever you want a broader view. Starting a separate conversation for that document keeps the thread easy to find later in your history.
Does the chat browse the web?
No. Answers are drawn from the documents in your workspace and cite them.
What can I upload before I start chatting?
PDF, Word and Excel files, plus scanned documents, which are read with OCR. Wait until each file shows as indexed, then set the scope to the whole workspace or one document and ask. Citations in the chat name the file each point came from.
