Ask plain questions of a filed tax return and see the line each answer comes from
A tax return is short on its face and long underneath. In the US, the Form 1040 summarizes income, deductions, credits and payments in a few pages, but the detail sits on attached schedules and forms, each of which feeds a line on the main return. Upload the return to a Search+ workspace, as the PDF your software produced or a scan of a paper copy, ask something like which schedules were attached and what each reported, and open the cited excerpt to read the figure on the form itself.

How to go through a tax return with Search+
- Upload the return and its source documents
Add the full return with every schedule, the prior year's return, and the documents it was built from, such as W-2s and 1099s, as PDFs or scans of the paper forms. A question about a line on this year's return can then draw on the form that supplied the number and on last year's figure.
- Set the purpose in Workspace Context
Write a standing instruction such as "I am checking this return before a mortgage application; for every figure, name the form, schedule and line it appears on". Search+ follows it for every question in that workspace.
- Ask one part at a time and open the line
Ask about income, then adjustments and deductions, then credits, then payments and the refund or balance due. Each answer cites the passage it used, with a page or section reference when the form provides one.

What reading a tax return carefully involves
On a US individual return, the Form 1040 carries totals, and schedules and forms carry the detail: for example Schedule B for interest and dividends, Schedule C for a sole proprietor's business, Schedule D for capital gains, Schedule E for rental and pass-through income, and Schedule A for itemized deductions. To understand a total, follow it to the schedule that produced it.
Forms such as W-2s, 1099s and K-1s report amounts to the taxpayer, and the return carries those amounts onto its lines. Checking a figure often means comparing the return with the form that supplied it.
Deductions reduce the income that tax is calculated on; credits reduce the tax itself. A return shows them in different places, which matters when you ask why the tax changed.
Most states that tax income have their own return, which usually starts from figures on the federal return and then applies its own adjustments. Upload both if you want questions to cover both.
Rules, forms and line numbers change from year to year, so the same item can sit on a different line in another year's return. Ask about the item by name rather than by line number when comparing years.
Search+ cites the passage behind each answer, with a page or section reference when the return provides one, and it does not invent locations the document does not contain. A return saved from tax software and one scanned from paper both work, since scanned pages are read with OCR.
