Read a settlement agreement before you sign away a claim
A settlement agreement ends a dispute on agreed terms, and the important words are often in the conditions rather than the headline number: when and how payment is made, which claims are released, what must stay confidential, whether anyone admits fault and what happens if a party does not perform. Upload the agreement as a PDF, ask about each term in plain language, and read the cited clause before you sign.

How to review a settlement agreement with Search+
- Upload the agreement and its attachments
Add the settlement agreement together with its exhibits, such as a payment schedule, a form of dismissal or a separate release, up to 10 files at a time.
- Describe your position in Workspace Context
Write standing instructions such as "I am the employee settling a claim against a former employer; point out anything I give up beyond the claims in the lawsuit." Each question in the workspace is answered with that in mind.
- Ask about one obligation at a time
Ask about payment, the release, confidentiality and non-disparagement as separate questions. Every answer cites the supporting excerpt, so you can open the clause it came from.
Questions people ask about a settlement agreement
When is each settlement payment due, and what happens if a payment is late?
Which claims am I releasing, and does the release cover claims I do not know about yet?
What am I allowed to say about the dispute and the settlement afterwards?
Does the agreement say that neither party admits liability?
What has to happen with the court case after signing, and who files the papers?
What can each party do if the other side does not comply with the agreement?
What reading a settlement agreement involves
The release decides which claims end. Its definition of claims, parties and time period usually matters more than any other clause.
Payment can depend on signing deadlines, dismissal of the case, delivery of tax forms or other steps. Read the order in which things must happen.
Confidentiality, non-disparagement and cooperation clauses can continue long after payment. Check how long each lasts and what a breach costs.
Some kinds of claims and some jurisdictions add specific requirements, such as review or revocation periods. Search+ shows you what the document says; a lawyer can tell you whether it meets those rules.
The executed copy is often a scan with signatures, while the draft lives in Word. Search+ reads both, using OCR for the scan, so you can check whether the signed version matches the draft you agreed.
Every answer links to the excerpt it relies on, with a section reference when the agreement has one.
